Dutch food group Vion plans to revamp a poultry site in the UK, a move that could lead to the loss of 115 jobs.

Vion said yesterday (2 August) that it plans to restructure its loss-making processing plant in Coupar Angus in Scotland.

The announcement follows last month’s confirmation that it will close a sausage making site in Sheffield.

Vion pointed to increasing competition and rising feed and fuel costs as factors behind its decision to revamp the Coupar Angus site.

The company admitted 115 jobs could be under threat but said it had grown the workforce at the facility from under 600 to over 1,100 since it acquired the plant in 2006.

Andrew Fisher, operations director for Vion UK’s poultry business unit, said: “We regret the need for these proposed changes in our activities announced today, and we have informed our employees of our commitment to consult with them and their trade union. “We are committed to the consultation process being as productive as possible and we will be looking for every opportunity to minimise job losses.”
