McCambridge Group has entered into discussions to sell its own label cake division.

The UK baked goods company said today (1 October) the decision to sell the unit followed a strategic review of the business.

The division operates bakeries in Manchester, Bradford, Blackburn, Salisbury in the UK, and Szczecin in Poland. It produces a range of cakes and pies, including celebration cakes, mince pies, muffins and loaf cakes for leading retailers.

The company did not disclose who the discussions are with.

“Following a strategic review of the business, it was agreed that our cake division has great potential and requires capital investment to realise that potential,” said Simon Webber, chairman of McCambridge. “Following approaches from third parties it was decided to consider a sale of the business.”

Webber said the unit is growing in both sales and profitability, adding that it is “an attractive option for a new investor”.

“Staff have been informed of the proposed sale and it is very much ‘business as usual’ with our bakeries delivering the same high levels of service and quality to customers,” he said. “Should the sale be agreed, employees will be transferred to the new owner and will continue to work as they currently do.”
