Kingsmill is set to be the first bread brand in the UK to carry The Carbon Trust’s carbon reduction label, its manufacturer said today (19 June).

The logo will feature on Kingsmill’s Great Everyday White, Tasty Wholemeal and 50/50 lines from the end of the month after a study by The Carbon Trust into carbon dioxide emissions at the bread maker.

Kingsmill CEO Mark Fairweather said moves to “decentralise” its bakery network over the last two years and led to the business cutting carbon emissions by 8,000 tonnes.

“Displaying the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label on our three best-selling sub-brands is a big step in communicating our environmental commitment in an effective and meaningful way to customers and consumers,” Fairweather said.

The Carbon Trust said it was “delighted to have Kingsmill on board”. Euan Murray, the trust’s carbon footprinting general manager, said: “There is a carbon cost to everything we consume, every day, starting with the slice of toast we have for breakfast.”

The Carbon Trust already works with PepsiCo, which managed to retain a carbon reduction label on its Walkers crisps brand after reducing the product’s carbon footprint by 7%.
