UK retailer Big Food Group, owner of frozen food retailer Iceland, has said it has built on its satisfactory start to the year with a 2.2% rise in quarterly like-for-like sales.
The group’s Iceland chain registered a 1.7% rise in like-for-like sales for the second quarter to 26 September, helped by the warm summer weather, which boosted sales of soft drinks and ice cream.
Iceland, which had been struggling to improve sales, now has over 10% of its store base trading under the new concept formats and will convert a further 60 stores in the second half, the company said.
“A continued focus on deal activity and a refocus on frozen food in the Iceland business has resulted in like for like sales continuing to show improvement and they are now in positive territory,” the group said in its trading statement.
Chief executive Bill Grimsey said: “Trading in the second quarter has maintained progress throughout the group and we are now achieving positive results from the implementation of our strategic plans.”
