Oppo Brothers, the London-based ice cream business, has launched plant-based products for the first time.

The move, revealed in an interview with just-food in January, will see the fledgling firm launching Oppo Non-Dairy in the UK this month via online retailer Ocado and also in the Netherlands, via retailer Albert Heijn and Belgium, via Delhaize.

The plant-based, lower-calorie ice cream comes in two flavours: Simply the Zest, described as a creamy panna cotta ice cream blended with a lemon swirl and lemon zest; and Very Almondberry, a “velvety almond ice cream with a raspberry swirl and toasted almond flakes”. Both flavours are created using Indonesian coconut milk.

The two flavours start at 157 calories per half tub.

Charlie Thuillier, co-founder of Oppo Brothers, said: “As vegan products have become more popular brands have rushed to capitalise sometimes to the detriment of authentic flavour and textures that consumers desire. Oppo has spent the last three years making sure that our plant-based SKUs are just as premium as our dairy ice cream, aligning with our mission of being famous for flavour, not just calories.”

The new products have an RRP of GBP4.99 (US$6.48) for a 475ml tub.

Oppo Brothers’ products are sold in more than 1,000 stores in the UK, including branches of Sainsburys, Waitrose and Whole Foods Market.
