The UK subsidiary of Italian food maker Egidio Galbani has announced its plan to grow its business with the introduction of a cured meats range to its product portfolio.


The company, which said it is on track to grow by 15% in 2004 to reach a turnover of £23m (US$41.8m) in the UK, is targeting multiple and independent grocery retailers, as well as the fine food trade, through a phased roll out of its product in the deli counter, pre-packed and private label sectors.


Galbani has made Italian cured meats since 1936 and the sector accounts for 30% of its worldwide turnover, but in the UK the company has mainly focused on cheese products.


“The UK is one of the fastest growing markets in the world for Italian meats, and currently over 20% of all exports from Italy arrive in the UK,” said Mauricio Giamellaro, managing director of Galbani UK.


The company said its cured meats range would be available in deli format from August, while the pre-packaged selection would be available by the end of the year.
