UK dairy processors have claimed that they have launched a scheme to help the sector become more environmentally friendly.
Dairy UK, the industry body, said a “benchmarking tool” will allow the organisation;s members to record their performance against key environmental indicators – and compare that performance against their peers.
The tool will help Dairy UK measure the sector’s progress against targets set out in last year’s “Milk Roadmap”.
Dairy UK environment manager Fergus McReynolds claimed UK processors are making some of the “greenest milk” in Europe.
“A recent study found the sector was responsible for less than 3% of UK greenhouse gas emissions,” McReynolds said.
“This launch should help companies to become more efficient and identify areas where individual sites can improve their environmental performance. Benchmarking has the power to drive major change across the dairy industry, to the benefit of the environment and the bottom line.”
