The Competition Commission chairman, Sir Derek Morris, has said the UK regulator is on track to finish its inquiry into possible bids for UK supermarket chain Safeway by 12 August.

“Some have speculated that the Competition Commission is running late with the Safeway inquiry,” Morris was quoted by AFX as saying.
“The current deadline is very demanding, and we have received a wide range of views on a broad set of diverse and detailed issues…but we are currently proceeding according to schedule, not least because of the cooperation on our timetable which we have received so far.”
The Commission inquiry concerns possible bids for Safeway by UK supermarket firms Tesco, J Sainsbury, William Morrison and Wal-Mart’s Asda.
The Commission is due to deliver its verdict on each of the bids to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Patricia Hewitt, who will then review the findings, reported AFX News.
