UK retailer The Co-operative Group is planning a major brand relaunch, a spokesperson for the group confirmed today (9 January).

The company is planning a “huge” investment to relaunch its brand in an attempt to win over new customers, the group revealed.

“We are working on the details of the campaign now but it will be a huge investment for us,” CEO Peter Marks said.

“We will totally relaunch the brand and want to send a message out to people to come and try us if they haven’t been for a while as we’ve changed.”

However, a spokesperson for the retailer told just-food that – as the project is still in the planning stage – no further details are currently available.

Earlier this week, the company reported like-for-like sales growth of 5.2% in the fourth-quarter to 3 January.

Delivering the results, Marks revealed that the company anticipates completing its acquisition of UK peer Somerfield’s stores in the first quarter of this year.

“This robust performance is particularly pleasing coming ahead of our exciting acquisition of Somerfield, which we will complete in the first quarter of this year. We look forward to 2009 from a position of increasing strength,” Marks said.
