A food importer, selling British products to expatriates living in Belgium, has won a legal battle to sell loaves of her country’s much derided bread, even though its salt content exceeded that permitted under Belgian law. It states that bread with more than 2% salt content cannot be sold in Belgium, but the European Court of Justice has ruled that Christina Bellamy’s English Shop Wholesale SA should have been able to sell her British bread, even though it had a 2.88 per cent salt content. Its judges ruled that Belgium had broken European Union freedom of trade rules, which say that goods that are legal in one Member State should be available across the EU.
