UK supermarket chains Tesco and Sainsbury’s are reportedly considering increasing their orders of different meats, such as beef and lamb, in case consumers steer clear of traditional turkeys amid fears over bird flu.

While Asda, Sainsbury’s and Wm Morrison all said this week that poultry sales remained stable, market leader Tesco said there had been a slight dip in sales, although it expected sales to recover quickly, reported the Financial Times.
Poultry sales in various European countries have been dented by consumer fears over bird flu, despite recent advice from the European Food Safety Agency that there is no evidence that the virus can be passed to humans via the consumption of poultry meat and eggs. Poultry sales fell 40% in Italy last month, and 20% in France last week, compared to a year earlier.
