Own-label manufacturer Bakkavor was warned that over 100 staff could face losing their jobs after a supply review by Asda.

Workers at Bakkavor subsidiary English Village Salads (EVS) are in talks with the company over plans to reorganise its packing operations.

Bakkavor said Asda had chosen to move a “substantial part” of its “salads procurement” to what the supplier called the retailer’s “in-house operation”.

The move, Bakkavor explained, would have a “significant effect” on volumes at EVS. Bakkavor said: “Despite growth with other customers in both the retail and foodservice sector, the business has no option but to consult with staff in order to adjust the scale of its operation.”

Bakkavor estimated there could 84 redundancies among the hourly-paid staff at EVS’s two sites in North Yorkshire. Among the salaried staff, 23 employees could be redundant.
