Andy Clarke has been promoted to the post of chief executive officer of Wal-Mart owned UK supermarket group Asda.

Clarke, currently Asda’s chief operating officer, replaces former-CEO Andy Bond who announced last month that he would scale back his involvement at Asda and take on the part-time role of chairman of the executive board.

Both appointments will take immediate effect.

In a statement released today (11 May), US parent Wal-Mart said Clarke will lead the supermarket’s efforts to become “an even better food retailer, a broader non-food retailer and a leader in e-commerce”.

Last month, Asda indicated that it intends to drive growth by consolidating its position as the country’s number two food retailer behind Tesco and becoming the UK’s largest non-food retailer over the next five years.
