Discount retailer Aldi has confirmed plans to open a distribution centre in South Yorkshire in the UK.

A spokesperson for the group told just-food today (19 June) that it will obtain possession of the Goldthorpe-based facility in August.

Construction is expected to begin during the first quarter of 2013.

An Aldi spokesperson added: “Further information will be made available in due course.”

The move is expected to create around 200 jobs, according to the South Yorkshire Time, and will supply stores extending from Scarborough to Boston in Lincolnshire and from the western side of the Peak District to the east coast.

According to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel, Aldi grew faster than the market in the 12 weeks to 13 May. The retailer posted “record” growth of 25.4%, achieving a share of 2.8%.
