UK-based Anglo Beef Processors (ABP) has shuttered its Blackburn facility, the latest stage in a review of the company’s processing footprint in the country.

The closure of the Lancashire abattoir, which took place on Friday (11 December), was for “commercial reasons”, the company said, following recent acquisitions at Guildford and Dorset and a review of its “increased processing capacity and business efficiencies”.

“It has become clear that the best commercial decision for ABP is that our ongoing investment programme should be focused on our other facilities throughout Great Britain,” a spokesperson for ABP said.

The beef processor said it is continuing to invest in its UK processing base to deliver a network of “low-cost, strategically located efficient processing facilities” and has only recently completed a significant upgrade at ABP Shrewsbury to increase capacity at the site.

All staff at Blackburn are being offered alternative jobs within the ABP network, the company said.

ABP has abattoir plants at Ellesmere, Shrewsbury, York, Guildford and Sturminster Newton in England; Perth in Scotland; and at Newry and Lurgan in Northern Ireland.
