UK food firm 2 Sisters Food Group has confirmed a proposal to close its poultry facility in Suffolk..

The company said today (13 August) it has entered into a period of consultation about the proposed closure, which puts over 430 jobs at risk.

The Haughley Park site, which produces roasted chicken for supermarkets, was acquired by the business in 2005.

A spokesperson for 2 Sisters said it was “too early to say” where production will be moved to. The company operates other facilities in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex, with sites at Eye, Flixton, Witham, Basildon and Thetford.

“This just underlines the challenges in the sector,” the spokesperson said. “Yesterday it came out that we created 200 jobs in Sheffield in the last eight weeks because of the demand for products like flatbreads and sushi. For us that firmly illustrates the challenges the [UK food] sector has. We have to be fleet of foot, we have to be flexible and we have to move when we have to move in order to be more efficient.”

Olivier Goudineau, divisional managing director, said the Haughley Park is “an ageing site” with “many challenges”.
