Tyson Foods is to invest nearly US$60m on the expansion of its Pennsylvania distribution centre in Schuylkill County.
The US food giant, with brands include Sara Lee, Jimmy Dean and Tyson, has announced it will build a 164,000 sq ft addition to its existing facility with the goals of improving efficiency and supporting its growth plans.
“This expansion will allow us to better service our customers and ship our complete portfolio of protein packed brands from one distribution centre,” said Gregg Uecker, senior vice president of network planning and integration. “New technology will also improve team member safety while reducing our carbon footprint.”
The distribution centre serves foodservice and retail customers in the north-east of the US.
Tyson received funding from Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development, including a $46,000 grant and $228,000 in tax credits which will be distributed on the creation of new jobs. The company expects the project to create 114 jobs.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf welcomed the announcement. “The company is investing heavily in its future in Pennsylvania…. The 1-81 corridor has become an extremely attractive location for food processors, and I applaud Tyson Foods for choosing to grow right here in Pennsylvania.”
Last month, Tyson announced it was expanding one of its distribution centres in Georgia. That project, which is slated to be completed by late 2018, includes a 152,000 sq ft addition to its existing premises, which services customers in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina.
