Three boys, two aged 16- and one aged 17-years old, are currently facing eight year jail sentences in Turkey for stealing chocolate and biscuits from a warehouse in Istanbul.
The boys, who are due in court today [Monday], stole the items in December and have been held in a juvenile detention house. Prosecutors say that the crime is a serious one, deserving of eight years behind bars, because they broke the warehouse door.
According to the Milliyet newspaper, they told police: “We were hungry and did not have any money to buy food. We were forced to steal.”
In 1997 a similar case sparked widespread outrage when four children were given nine years in jail for stealing confectionery and nuts from a pastry shop in Gaziantep.
