The Andersons, a US grain supplier, has acquired ancient grain business Purity Foods for an undisclosed sum.

Purity produces organic and conventional ancient grains under the Nature’s Legacy and Vita-Spelt brands. Products include spelt pastas, flours and cereals and the brand is stocked in regional natural and organic stores such as Whole Foods Market.

“Our investment in Purity Foods is consistent with our objective to expand the grain group’s food ingredient business,” said Andy Vollmar, director of food ingredients and speciality grains at The Andersons.

“The Andersons has been a longtime supplier of food grade corn, oats, soybeans and wheat to the US food market. We are now moving into milling ancient grain products with a direct transparent supply chain, giving visibility to and for our farm customers as well as our food manufacturers. We are excited about the new capabilities this acquisition gives our company.”

Purity Foods is based in Michigan and operates a production facility that includes a 650,000-bushel storage capacity, two production lines and a cleaning facility capable of conditioning and colour sorting organic and conventional grains. The site is certified by the American Institute of Baking and Quality Assurance International.
