Milk suppliers, Arla Foods and Müller have linked up with Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket group, to promote sustainability in the dairy industry.

They have announced an on-farm 30% emissions reduction goal by 2030.

The initiative, named the “Future Dairy Partnership”, will involve all 400 of Tesco’s Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) farmers in the UK.

The initiative also seeks to extend its reach by collaborating with other industry stakeholders.

Tesco chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad said: “We’ve been playing a leading role in transitioning to a low carbon agriculture sector for some time, through the close long-term partnerships we have with our Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group farmers.

“The group has pioneered groundbreaking work on a number of areas, including animal welfare improvements, carbon foot-printing and introducing innovations such as methane reducing additives.

“What’s clear is that to achieve our stretching climate and nature goals, we must work together as an industry to implement transformational improvements at pace, so we’re delighted to be partnering with Arla and Muller on this project.”

The farmer-led partnership will build upon the existing Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group, as well as the Arla and Müller milk pools that supply Tesco.

The UK collaboration between the local arms of Germany’s Müller and Denmark’s Arla is set to foster innovation, share best practices and accelerate efforts to cut emissions, the parties suggested.

Key areas of focus for the partnership include the development and implementation of on-farm projects, such as trialling methane-reducing feed additives.

A dedicated farmer focus group will also explore nature-led initiatives to complement carbon footprint reduction efforts.

Furthermore, the partnership will generate industry reports outlining the steps needed for a more sustainable dairy future, including the innovation and financial support required across the agricultural sector.

A sustainable dairy blueprint will also be created to provide farmers with clear sustainability and ethical guidelines while allowing for operational flexibility.
