Switzerland-based meat company Bell Group is expanding its presence in Spain with the acquisition of the production plants of Spanish charcuterie specialist Nobleza Iberica in the west of the country, as well as investing in the construction of a new Serrano ham facility near Madrid.

Details of the Nobleza Iberica transaction, which Bell said was completed on 6 April, have not been released.

Bell said Nobleza Iberica has an annual production capacity of some 150,000 hams and 1,000 tonnes of charcuterie. “The Nobleza Iberica plant specialises in the production of high-quality Iberico ham and Spanish charcuterie, known as embutidos, and offers the ideal supplement to Bell’s current product range in Spain,” the group said.

Meanwhile, Bell said it is investing around EUR40m (US$42.3m) in the new-build project, “which will offer 100 additional jobs upon completion”. A ground-breaking ceremony for the facility will take place later this month and Bell said production is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2018.

The group said: “In future, Bell will be able with its three production plants to offer a complete range of Spanish ham (Iberico, Serrano) and Spanish cured sausages (Chorizo, Salchichon, Lomo) from its own production, allowing the company to further expand its market position in Spain and the export markets. The products are marketed under the national Sanchez Alcaraz brand and other brands of the Bell Group.”

Separately, Bell said today (10 April) it is selling its Novak branch shops in the Czech Republic to the retail unit’s managing director as part of a management buyout. The retail business in the country “did not belong to the Bell Group’s strategic business areas,” the group said.
