Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW), a joint venture between Nestlé and General Mills, will see its innovation centre in Orbe, Switzerland, open next year, the cereal maker said today (2 October).

The centre, at a cost of around CHF50m (US$48m), will focus on nutrition, health and wellness and has been designed to accelerate the company’s development of innovative and nutritious breakfast cereals, the company said today (2 October).

Construction of the site, which started in early 2009, is nearing the half-way stage and is due to be completed mid-2010.

“The CPW Innovation Centre will bring together expertise from Nestlé and General Mills in the field of breakfast cereals,” CPW said. “This new innovation centre will further build on General Mills’ technical strengths and Nestlé’s 50 years of R&D experience in Orbe, as well as on both partners’ know-how in food processing technologies.”

The centre will be built with “low environmental impact”, the company said, using wood sourced from environmentally-responsible forest management, and once completed, is expected to meet the requirements for LEED certification – standards for environmentally sustainable construction as determined by the US Green Building Council.
