Unilever Sweden has announced that production of Slotts mustard is to end at its 90-year-old plant in Uppsala, Sweden, with output probably moved to Poland.

Gustaf Ljungren, Slotts’ production director, confirmed the closure to just-food.com this morning (12 September). He said the company had lost market share in recent years and the factory, with annual capacity of 30,000 tons, was now producing just 5,000 tons. “We have not been able to increase prices because of stiff competition,” Ljungren said.
Slotts has been owned by Cadbury Schweppes and Kraft Foods over the years and was bought by Unilever in 1999. It still has 50% of the Swedish mustard market even though capacity utilization is running at under 20%, Ljungren said.
Some 52 people will be made redundant when the factory closes in the second quarter of 2008.
