Produce group Fyffes has acquired the Spanish citrus fruits specialist Medicitrus, marking the company’s entry into the citrus fruits sector, for an undisclosed sum.

Fyffes said the purchase price of the “trade and assets” of Medicitrus was under the threshold above which disclosure was required.

Medicitrus, which is based in Castellon, has been renamed Fyffes Citrus. Fyffes, best known for its banana brand, said the change of name was aimed at creating “a strong Fyffes brand image for citrus products”.

Ruth Castilla, who was already heading up the Medicitrus operation, has been named as managing director of Fyffes Citrus.

Fyffes said Fyffes Citrus will continue to source fruit from its existing base of 150 fruit suppliers and would remain involved in all stages of production.
