Ebro Puleva, the Spain-based food maker, is mulling plans to sell its sugar business.


The company has restructured its sugar arm in recent months in the face of EU reform of the sector.


The reforms have led to volumes falling at Azucarera Ebro, the company’s sugar business, and a possible sale would see the group focus on its branded operations.


Ebro’s sugar division, the company’s third-largest behind pasta and rice, has weighed on its financial performance in recent months.


Yesterday (5 May), the company said earnings from sugar had fallen 6% during the first quarter of the year.

Ebro said its board would also study whether to spin off and float the sugar division instead.
