German retailer Globus has secured a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to fund the building of four “green” hypermarkets in Russia.
The EBRD has provided a EUR117.5m (US$154.3m) ten-year loan to Hyperglobus, the German firm’s local arm to build what the bank called “some of Russia’s most energy-efficient hypermarkets”.

Globus is looking to be the “first retailer in Russia to implement an active waste management system”, which includes “waste separation and proper waste disposal”.
The retailer told just-food: “It is a part of the corporate social responsibility policy of Globus-Holding to be environment-friendly and to be a ‘local hero’ for all our customers.”
Three of the outlets will be in the towns of Korolev and Krasnogorsk in the Moscow region. The fourth will be in the Russian region of Tver. The retailer plans to open the outlets within the next three years.
Globus, which outside Germany also has stores in the Czech Republic, already has five outlets in Russia.
