Carrefour plans to spend PLN1bn (US$359m) as part of a drive to become Poland’s largest food retailer, the French group has told just-food.
The company, which operates over 130 stores in Poland, will build five hypermarkets this year and rebrand its Champion and Globi supermarkets.
The five hypermarkets will open in the Polish cities of Gliwice, Glogów, Bialystok, Szczecin and Lublin. The company said it will open smaller hypermarkets in other Polish cities with a maximum of 70,000 inhabitants.
“The company wants to get a position of the leader in Poland within the supermarkets and hypermarkets sector,” Carrefour Polska told just-food today (11 May).
Last December, Carrefour agreed to buy 179 supermarkets and 15 hypermarkets from Dutch rival Ahold.
