The Philippines government has reportedly called on the country’s bakers to formalise complaints over the cost of flour before it launches an official inquiry.

Following a complaint lodged from the Philippine Baking Industry Group (PhilBaking), Trade Undersecretary for Consumer Welfare Zenaida Maglaya said that the DTI would launch an investigation if the bakers lodged a formal complaint.

“They wrote a letter to Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila and in a meeting we told them to formalise their petition so we can subject the industry for investigation,” Maglaya was reported to have said by BusinessWorld.

In the letter, dated 19 May, PhilBaking said: “We are seeking urgent action … to intercede in behalf of the baking industry and Filipino consumers in order to stop this price increase from the flour millers.”

PhilBaking represents bakers accounting for 70% of supermarket bread sales.
