Sweden’s Petbuddy Group (PBG) has named a new CEO in the form of Paul van der Raad, who takes on the role at the Stockholm-based business on 1 January.
Van der Raad will replace Alexander Retzlik, one of the co-founders of the pet food and pet-nutrition company along with Erik Gustafsson.
The incoming CEO was most recently heading up insect ingredients supplier Protix, which serves pet-food producers, the aquaculture industry and the livestock sector. His career history also includes stints as CEO at the Danish companies Henne Pet Food and Vital Petfood Group.
“Paul is set to lead PBG’s next phase of growth, focusing on product innovation, sustainability and expanding market reach,” the company said in a statement.
“Paul van der Raad’s extensive experience in global pet care will be crucial as PBG advances its mission to deliver high-quality, responsibly produced products that enhance a pet’s well-being.”
Van der Raad added: “We build sustainable pet brands that do good for pets, pet parents, and the planet.

By GlobalData“I look forward to working closely with the PBG team and trusted business partners to drive meaningful growth and further our shared commitment to responsible pet care.”
Petbuddy, set up in 2018, expanded through M&A this year and entered the UK market with the acquisition of London-based Thrive Pet Foods for an undisclosed sum.
The Sweden business mainly caters to European markets, especially the Nordic region, but also exports to south-east Asia, South America and the US.
As well as Thrive, Petbuddy’s brands encompass food and nutrition products for cats and dogs such as the fortified Buddy Pet Foods line, Little BigPaw and Nutrolin supplements sold in retail and via direct-to-consumer.
Commenting on van der Raad’s appointment, PBG chairman Newton Aguiar said: “Paul’s expertise in the pet industry strongly positions him to guide PBG towards a future focused on quality, sustainability and growth. We’re excited to see PBG continue serving pet owners worldwide with innovative products they can trust.”
Just Food has asked PBG to confirm what role at the company Retzlik will now take up.
