Norwegian supermarket chain REMA 1000 was the fastest-growing of the major grocers in the country in 2012, parent company Reitan Gruppen has claimed.
Citing data from Nielsen, Reitan said REMA 1000 was the “winner” among the country’s food retailers last year.
REMA 1000, Norway’s third-largest food retailer by market share, saw sales increase 7.4% last year to NOK30.6bn (US$5.25bn). Reitan said the market grew by 3.1%.
The REMA 1000 chain saw sales jump 19.5% in Denmark, a smaller market for the business, last year.
“REMA 1000 has achieved great progress in recent years, and in 2012 we made ??a major step forward by investing NOK600m in our 500 stores in Norway to focus even more focus on fresh foods, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. In Denmark, [there was] growth at a record speed. Absolutely fantastic,” REMA 1000 CEO Ole Robert Reitan said.
Turnover from REMA 1000 was up 11.6% at NOK47.59bn. EBITDA increased 1.8%.
The higher sales and profits from REMA 1000, as well as from its REMA convenience business, helped Reitan post improved group turnover and earnings last year. Sales were up 12.3% at NOK71.67bn. Pre-tax profits increased 11.3% to NOK2.04bn.
