The Dutch competition watchdog is set to probe Schuitema’s planned acquisition of 80 Super de Boer stores following a request from the EU.
The European Commission said today (26 January) that Dutch watchdog the NMa would look into the deal, which came after Super de Boer was snapped up by rival retailer Jumbo last year.
Schuitema, which runs the C1000 chain, had been linked to a joint bid for Super de Boer with Sperwer, but instead headed to Jumbo’s corner and agreed to buy 80 outlets.
“The transaction threatens to significantly affect competition in a number of local retail markets within The Netherlands,” a statement from the Commission said.
