Dutch poultry processor Storteboom has been declared bankrupt, as its poor financial state was aggravated by the recent outbreak of bird flu in the Netherlands.
The company’s around 1000 workers are to be laid off by the end of June 2003, although a number of them may be re-employed if the company resumes operating.
Storteboom is the largest poultry processing company in the Netherlands, with a market share of 20%, reported the Dutch News Digest.
The company posted losses in 2001 and 2002 as it failed to compete with cheap poultry imports from Brazil and Thailand.
