Nestlé is investing EUR100m (US$110.5m) to modernise its plants in Germany with an emphasis on digital technologies and sustainability.

The Switzerland-based food company said its chocolate facility in Hamburg will benefit from a new packaging line, while its site in the municipality of Nonnweiler has already launched a production line for Wagner Rustipani frozen pizza following a EUR15m investment.

Nestlé said all of its 15 factories in Germany will now source electricity from renewable sources, while the company has cut down on water usage and is employing robots to work alongside staff, particularly for operations like lifting heavy weights. 

Edgar Jäckle, the plant manager at Nonnweiler, said: “Our new line produces around 20% more products per shift. However, we now consume significantly less water and energy.”

The chairman of Nestlé’s German operations, Marc Boersch, said the EUR100m is being invested through the course of 2019.

He added: “Above all, we invest in technology, making our plants more efficient, digital and sustainable. Since 2010, we have been able to reduce our water consumption in Germany by 41% and our CO2 emissions by 68%. We will continue to work on improving the environmental performance of our plants in the future.”
