Wal-Mart Stores today (30 June) denied speculation that it is looking to enter Nepal.

According to Nepali publication Republica, a representative from the world’s largest retailer met with government officials and expressed its interest to expand into the country.

The representative also enquired about the legal provisions for expanding Wal-Mart’s operations in the country, Republica said.

However, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart’s business in neighbouring India denied the reports describing them as “speculative and incorrect”. “We are not considering this,” he told just-food.

Wal-Mart entered India in 2009 through a partnership with Bharti Retail. It operates cash-and-carry stores in the country.
