Tate & Lyle Sugars is to build a sugar refinery in Oman to serve markets in the Middle East and eastern Africa.

The company, part of American Sugar Refining, is working with local firm Oman Sugar on a refinery in the Port of Sohar in the country.

Construction will start in the third quarter of this year. The plant is expected to be complete in the second half of 2015. Tate & Lyle Sugars said the two sides want the refinery to have a capacity of one million tonnes a year.

Sugar will be made for the retail and industrial sectors in the region. Oman, Middle East, East Africa will be the “principle target markets”, Tate & Lyle Sugars said.

The company declined to reveal how much it is investing in the project.
