Little Dish, a UK business that makes meals designed for children, has developed what it says is the first “healthy pizza” for toddlers to go on sale in its home market.

The company has launched three five-inch pizzas that have 35% less salt per 100g than the average salt in chilled pizzas aimed at children.

Marketing director Charlotte Tisdall said Little Dish had reached the lower level of salt by lowering the amount of the ingredient in the pizza base and using less cheese on top. The pizzas only contain mozzarella, which Tindall noted is lower in salt than cheddar.

“Mums and Dads often tell us they feel guilty about giving pizza to their little ones because they’re worried about hidden nasties. We saw this as a clear opportunity for Little Dish,” Tisdall said.

The range comprises classic margherita; pesto chicken and veg; and mini meatballs and veg. The pizzas, priced at a recommended GBP2.50 (US$3.83), will be available from 7 September at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and through Ocado followed by a roll out to Asda in November. Tisdall added: “We’re hoping for confirmation from Tesco soon.”
