Japan’s Kewpie Corp. is acquiring Polish food maker Mosso Kwasniewscy as part of its overseas expansion efforts.

Mosso will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Tokyo-based company, renowned for its mayonnaise products. It will be known as Mosso Kewpie Poland, the Japanese firm said.

Completion is expected by the end of December.

Mosso presently accounts for 6% of the Polish mayonnaise market, making it the fourth-largest local player. It also produces ketchup, mustard and other sauces, has a staff of 147 and reported net sales of JPY2.38bn (US$22.8m) in 2015. The purchase price was not disclosed.

In a statement, Kewpie said it has been “accelerating” its growth in China and south-east Asia, has entered the North American market and gained a foothold in Europe in August 2015 through the opening of Kewpie Trading Europe, in Amsterdam.

“Mosso is a popular mayonnaise brand in Poland and, through the acquisition of this brand, production base and sales channels in Eastern Europe, we aim to speed up our European expansion,” said Kewpie.
