Japanese food group Ezaki Glico has reported an increase in quarterly profits, helped by its confectionery and frozen desserts businesses.

The company booked operating income of JPY4.61bn (US$44.9m) for the three months to 27 June, compared to JPY3.81bn a year earlier.

Ezaki Glico, which sells the Pocky confectionery brand, saw the profitability of its confectionery and frozen desserts divisions improve year-on-year. Both units reported higher sales.

Revenue from Ezaki Glico’s dairy business, its second-largest by sales, increased but earnings dropped amid investment in advertising.

The company’s processed food arm saw sales fall but its operating losses narrow.

The group’s total operating income also received a boost from its food ingredients arm.
