Japanese convenience store operator Lawson is opening its first outlet inside a bank today [Wednesday], as part of a move to diversify its operations.

In the face of growing competition, Lawson has been looking for new and different locations to site new outlets. Last week, the retailer announced it had made an agreement with the Teito Rapid Transit Authority to open its first Lawson outlet in a subway station in Tokyo in November.
Lawson has also opened outlets in hospitals and opened its first store in a post office on 1 August.
This latest tie-up will see Lawson operating a convenience store in Hokuriku Bank’s main Tokyo branch. The store, which will be open 24 hours a day, will also accept loan and foreign currency exchange applications outside of the bank’s opening hours.
The two companies said they planned to extend the tie-up by opening similar stores in Hokuriku Bank’s regional base of Toyama Prefecture, central Japan, reported Dow Jones International News.
