A new system of farm controls has meant the end of the BSE crisis in Japan, agriculture minister Tsutomu Takebe told reporters last week.

Takebe insisted that the recent reports that cows are not being slaughtered officially in order to avoid mad cow testing procedures are “nothing to be worried about.

“The number of those cattle is less than 30,000 now although it was 58,000 at a certain time,” he said.
