Super-Sol, Israel’s leading supermarket chain, is negotiating with Starbucks Israel to form a strategic cooperation.
The negotiations between Delek Fuel company, which controls Starbucks Israel, and Super-Sol pertains to setting up a chain of cafes in large Super-Sol branches. According to a report in Globes, “the negotiations also concern a possible Super-Sol partnership in Starbucks Israel.”
Starbucks Israel opened five cafes since it started its operations in Israel in July 2001, and three more cafes are planned to be opened next quarter. The report notes that the rate of opening branches in Israel “does not match Starbucks International’s original business plan, which called for 20 branches in Israel’s major cities by the end of 2002. Starbucks Israel will have at most ten branches by the end of this year.”
In the wake of the worsening security situation in the Jerusalem region, Starbucks Israel decided against opening a branch in Jerusalem, leading to cutbacks in personnel originally slated to operate and manage the branch. Starbucks Israel previously negotiated with Blue Square supermarket chain to open cafes in the chain’s stores.
