Reliance Industries reportedly intends to increase its presence in the Indian retail sector through its Reliance Retail unit with the opening of 11 Reliance Fresh stores in Hyderabad.
Reliance Fresh stores sell groceries and fresh produce. The company plans to open Reliance Fresh stores in 784 urban towns and 6,000 rural locations in the next five years. The company has also scheduled the opening of outlets in 70 citied in the next two-years, Indian Business Insight reported.
“The project will boast of a seamless supply chain infrastructure, unprecedented even by world standards. Through multiple formats and a wide range of categories, Reliance is aiming to touch almost every Indian customer and supplier,” the group said on its website.
In addition to the Reliance Fresh stores, the company plans to open 4,000 stores in other formats – hypermarkets, supermarkets, speciality stores and discount outlets.
The news comes as just days after Bharti Enterprises announced that it was entering the Indian retail market through a joint venture with Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer.
