A fully-automated milk processing plant set to start operations next month will double Gujarat-based Rajkot Dairy’s capacity to 600,000 litres managing director Ashish Sinha has told just-food.
The plant, in Rajkot, Gujarat, has the capacity to reach processing of up to 1m litres per day, he said.
The dairy is planning to introduce a range of products as a result. Among them are probiotic yogurt, sterilised flavoured milk, fresh paneer and mozzerella cheese, adding to its existing portfolio of liquid milk, butter milk, flavoured milk and peda [Indian dairy-based confectionery], he said.
The plant was set up by Rajkot Dairy at a cost of US$16.6m, working with India’s National Dairy Development Board, which helped fund the development. Rajkot Dairy is a member of the Amul co-operative group and also sells products under its own brand Gopal.
Sinha praised his co-operative’s “culture of innovation and renovation”, noting that by having access to Amul’s “proprietary technology, brands, expertise and extensive centralised research and development facilities gives us a distinctive advantage”.
