Carrefour has opened a second cash-&-carry store in India.
The French retailer opened the store in Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan State, yesterday (28 November) under the Carrefour Wholesale Cash & Carry name. It is expected to sell more than 10,000 products in food and non-food to professional businesses, institutions, restaurants and local retailers.
Carrefour India executive director Jean-Noël Bironneau said: “This second opening in Jaipur represents the next step of Carrefour’s presence in the Indian market, which holds important growth opportunity.”
“As well as our intention to expand in the cash-&-carry segment, we maintain our ambition to develop in other formats”.
The company opened its first Indian cash-&-carry store New Delhi in December 2010.
The opening follows India’s cabinet decision on Thursday to reform the country’s foreign direct investment (FDI) laws. Under the announcement, foreign companies can now own 51% of multi-brand retail stores. Previously, major retailers like Wal-Mart Stores,Tesco and Metro could only sell wholesale in India.
