European and Icelandic farm organisations have warned that the country’s meat and dairy production could be seriously hit by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
Europe’s Copa-Cogeca and the Farmers Association of Iceland have both warned ash is falling on an important agricultural area – home to 15% of the country’s cattle and 6% of sheep.

Livestock are currently being held indoors.
“The grazing season lies ahead and lambing starts in earnest in two or three weeks. Should the eruption continue for an extended period, resulting in ash damage to grazing fields and crops, it would constitute a major blow for…agriculture in Iceland,” Farmers Association chairman Haraldur Benediktsson warned.
