Retail prices for watermelons announced by supermarkets Tesco and Auchan are manipulative and unfair and the chains are leading the government “by the nose”, the director of a producers’ organization said, according to a report in the Budapest Business Journal which cited daily Magyar Hírlap.

The producers accuse the supermarket chains of price dumping and have asked Minister of Agriculture József Graf in a letter to ensure that they obey the law,

Béla Mártonffy said. Tesco sells watermelon for 29 forints per kilogram (US$0.15) and Auchan for 25 forints per kilogram, whereas the procurement price averages around 35 forints.
