Belgium-based grocer Delhaize has become the latest retailer to snap up a number of Plus outlets in Europe.
Delhaize, which owns the Food Lion and Hannaford stores in the US, is to buy Plus Hellas, some 33 stores discount stores owned by German conglomerate Tengelmann.
The deal, announced today (7 January) for an undisclosed sum, marks Tengelmann’s latest move to sell parts of its Plus business.
Just before Christmas, Tengelmann agreed to sell its Plus stores in Portugal to the country’s largest grocer, Jerónimo Martins. In November, Tengelmann ceded control of its German Plus stores to local rival Edeka.
Delhaize said its deal with Tengelmann would boost the presence of its local subsidiary, Alfa-Beta, in northern Greece. “From a geographic and real estate point of view, Plus Hellas is a perfect fill-in acquisition for Alfa-Beta,” said Alfa-Beta CEO Kostas Macheras.
