Delhaize, the Belgium-based retailer, is planning to open a discount chain of stores in Greece.

The company is building two outlets under the Lion Food Stores banner in the centre of Greece and said the 900-1,000 sq metre shops will be open by the end of the year.

A spokesperson for Delhaize said that, should the pilot launch prove a success, the company will roll out the stores across the country.

“This particular type of store will be offering 3,000 products covering essential needs and are focused on individuals and families who want to purchase good quality and branded foods at discount prices,” the spokesperson told just-food today (31 July).

Earlier this month, Delhaize revealed it was also looking for further acquisitions to boost its business in Greece.
