US-based sandwich shop chain Subway Restaurants has announced the opening of its new franchisee training centre in Germany.

Located in the city of Potsdam, near the German capital of Berlin, the centre is the world’s largest submarine sandwich chain’s fourth training site and the first in Europe.
The Subway restaurant chain views Germany as an area with high potential and anticipates that by making training available locally, entry into the Subway system will be seen as more convenient, resulting in greater growth in this region. Understanding that language differences can present challenges when attending the required training in the US, choosing to open the new training centre in Europe was a logical decision, the company said in a news release.
According to Dede Mahoney, Subway’s director of field staff training, “The first session of classes was attended by four new franchisees from cities such as Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. As growth continues and enrollment increases, we will look to expand course availability and consider additional locations for on-the-job-training.”
Aside from the language and location, the differences between the classes in Germany and those held in the Subway training centres in Australia, China and the United States are minimal.

By GlobalData“In Germany, more time will be spent on cost controls, product quality, bread baking and brand building. These are subjects that justify additional emphasis in order to strengthen local recognition of the Subway chain,” added Mahoney.
The Subway restaurant chain opened it first international location in the Middle Eastern nation of Bahrain in 1984. The chain now boasts more than 1,200 international units including more than 190 restaurants located throughout Europe.
