German food retailer Rewe has announced a collaboration with filling station giant Aral to trial its new Rewe ToGo filling station concept.

The trial, which will last a year, sees ten stations converted to a Rewe ToGo connvenience store and gas stop format, allowing customers to pick up their groceries while using the gas station.

“We are seeing that change the customer needs. Therefore, we provide consumers with the test sites – in addition to our quality fuels and car wash – an even more attractive offer high-quality, fresh foods available. With this innovative, customer-focused, we want to offer new customer segments, develop and continue to grow in the shop and bistro business, “explains Rainer Kraus, head of strategic cooperation at Aral.

Pilot stores will launch in April. The first two in Dusseldorf will open on 3 April. One in Cologne will follow on 24 April and the remainder will continue to open until mid-August.

The ten sites will have a “fresh range” with up to 1,200 items including fresh, chilled convenience foods such as sandwiches, wraps, sushi, cut fruit, salads, soups, vegetables and desserts. Consumers will also find everyday foodstuffs including cereal, bread spreads, pasta, rice, spices, sugar, and oil. The stores will also carry a baked goods range and a hot bistro.
